PIMA
VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL is a School-to-Work Charter School with a focus on youth
17 to 21 years old who are looking for an alternative opportunity to succeed in
obtaining a secondary education along with vocational training.
OUR
HISTORY
Early
in 1996 the Pima County Community Resources Department identified the need to
bridge the gap between education and employment for young people who may have
barriers to successful employment. This required linking the County employment
and training programs with a variety of youth support resources and a creative,
challenging, youth-friendly learning environment.
That
same year, the Pima County Board of Supervisors adopted resolution number
1996-232 which authorized the Community Services Department to apply for
designation as a Charter School and to appoint an initial operating Board to
provide oversight and policy supervision. The
board was composed of three School Board members from Sunnyside, Tucson and
Amphitheater School Districts, and a number of persons representing the Juvenile
Count, Pima Community College, the Tucson Police Department, the Mayors Office
and other school district officials.
In
September 2000 a team of Community Resources staff opened PIMA VOCATIONAL HIGH
SCHOOL, using an innovative School-to-Work model. Students are in small classes with individualized learning
plans and alternate between teacher led study and computer assisted activities. Part of every day is also spent in direct work experience placements.
